For twenty years the Preservation Alliance of Virginia (PAV) has advanced the cause of Virginia's preservation interests at every level--local, state and federal. This has been accomplished by providing opportunities for education and training, and by supporting public policy that has increased awareness--especially among Virginia's government and corporate leadership of the importance of historic preservation. Programs like the Annual Preservation Awards and the Endangered Properties list have brought the value of preservation to the attention of communities and individuals. Supporting all of the Alliance's efforts was a strong and vibrant network of organizational members who joined together to share the value of preservation in communities large and small across the Commonwealth.
In 2003, Preservation Alliance of Virginia and APVA Preservation Virginia initiated a formal process to explore joining forces of the two statewide preservation organizations to form a single, unified voice to promote preservation across the Commonwealth. The National Trust has facilitated the yearlong process. An agreement was reached during the spring of 2004 by the board members of the APVA Preservation Virginia and the PAV that preservation interests in Virginia can be served best by a multi-dimensional organization that honors the traditions, members, and aspirations of both organizations. APVA Preservation Virginia has adopted some of the features from the PAV website and several of PAV's publications are for sale on our online store.
